road accident claims - car drivers, pedestrians, passengers & cyclists

What to do after a road accident

Every year there are more than 300,000 cases of injury on Britain's roads. More than 40,000 are seriously injured. This number is said to be declining slightly but the statistics are still staggering.

Most road accidents do not involve injuries but merely damage to vehicles or property. However there are certain procedures that should always be followed after a road accident has occurred.

bullet

Always exchange names, addresses, phone numbers (avoid mobiles), insurance company details and registration plate numbers.

bullet

Make sure you know who the driver of the other car is and who the owner of the vehicle is. Also check the name of the person who has the insurance policy

bullet

Note a description of each car, including year, make, model, colour and damage sustained. This latter point can be very important.

bullet

Make a note of the exact location of the collision and how it happened - take photos if at all possible and provide a small map for your insurers if you can.

bullet

Do not admit discuss liability in the aftermath and certainly make no admissions.

bullet

Note the names addresses and telephone numbers of any witnesses independent or otherwise.

bullet

Inform the police - it usually only takes a phone call and they may decide not to attend the scene but at least you are fulfilling an obligation. The police don't attend RTA's where there are no injuries but it is still worth reporting an incident.

bullet

Report the claim immediately to your insurers.
